Washington Island Art Association (WIAA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing high quality workshops to its members in the unspoiled natural beauty of Door County, Wisconsin's Washington Island. Membership in the WIAA is open to professional and amateur artists and is a requirement in order to teach or participate in a sponsored workshop.

Spring on Washington Island - what could be better! Bring the stack of subjects you can't wait to paint, or be open to the daily inspiration of the light illuminating woods, harbors, wildflowers, buildings and island life. Be prepared for a fun, encouraging, and memorable week on the island!

Celebrate and express the light of your inner spirit... your thoughts and feelings! Light is the reason to paint! Each day we will explore new subjects... still life, flowers, people, animals, buildings, etc. You may bring your own photo references or paint new subjects. For all levels of watercolorists.

This is your opportunity to rid yourself of drawing anxieties and frustrations and improve your ability to just draw. Begin to really see what you are drawing using a series of exercises to learn to look in different ways. Materials will be provided as we experiment with various drawing mediums on numerous papers.

Springtime landscapes and florals - a weekend workshop with Door County artist Kari Anderson focusing on SPRING! Paint flowers...such as lilacs, tulips, trillium and some pretty, very simple landscapes of spring. Lots and lots of demonstrating and one-on-one instruction.

Enjoy an intermediate level of exploring and experimenting with watercolor. Plan to push your sense of color and expand your watercolor techniques while discovering and painting some of the endless subjects on beautiful Washington Island.There will be plenty of time to paint with individualized help and group critiques.

Rodger Bechtold will present two five day “on location” workshops dedicated to landscape painting in a new and contemporary context; a fusion of representation and abstraction with invented color to the extreme, both real and artificial. You’ll never see Door County the same way again. Separate registration is required for each session. Please register early, this has proven to be one of WIAA’s most popular classes.

July 18-22, 2011

This is a chance to uncover colors hidden inside you. From lemonade skies to purple cows, we will explore expressive approaches to pigments, work with ink and watercolor one of the three days and help bridge the gap between realistic representation and what you really want to say in your paintings.

Gary Hanks Guy Hanks, “Watercolor Eploration and Unique Techniques"
Sept. 30 thru Oct. 2, 2011 at the Art & Nature Center
Instructor fee: $180 (Includes studio fee)
We will explore multiple color glazing, resist techniques, smooth blending techniques and how to use opaque white. You will learn how to control the color field to create the illusion of luminosity.+

All WIAA members are welcome to show their art at this popular venue. The show has been such a success that we have expanded the length of the show. Each member may start with three pieces and more will be hung as items sell. Pieces must conform to the 12x12x12 specifications. Drop off art on July 28. More info on website.
