In this class, I will focus on mixing abstract shapes with realistic shapes to create depth, originality, and creativity. We will be working on a different subject every day. Students are encouraged to use their own creativity and love for a subject. We will use the beauty of the island for subjects. We will also use pets, people, and still lives.
I start the workshop with a yoga stretch, it is meant to relax and center each student, and make them feel competent. It also relaxes our neck and shoulder area.
There will be a demo every day, and plenty of painting time. Critiques are done with the group and are meant to be a learning tool. And remember, we all learn from each other.
Come with an open mind and a desire to learn something new and different. And remember to have fun!
Workshop fee: $325 member/$350 non-member (includes membership) • Legion Hall
Barbara Mathews
I have been teaching water media classes for over 20 years. I teach local classes as well as workshops throughout the country an abroad. In 2019, I was honored with the Life of and Artist award from the University of WI Foundation. I have received an outstanding Achievement in Arts Education and was also inducted into the United Artist Hall of Fame.
I belong to several art societies, I am represented by two galleries, and have been juried into several national exhibits.
I love to teach in many capacities. I teach on composition, values, shapes, color theory, watercolor and acrylic pouring, along with watercolor batik. I constantly hone my own skills by continuing taking workshops in all different methods of water media. Art has been my constant companion my whole life. And in many ways, it is my life.
My first love is to teach! I care very much about teaching a student from the very basics, so they learn the right way not only to work watercolor techniques, but that they understand the importance of the correct paper, paint, and brushes. I want to inspire people and I love to watch students open their eyes to beauty around them!
